    Join us after work every Tuesday evening for a backroads tour of Woodside and environs, including some moderate hills and extra-credit loops for faster riders.     If you can ride the hills but not at the fast D/E pace, come join us, the D Social Climbers. We do the same ride as the D/E's, meeting at Shoup Park at 8:45 AM for a 9:00 AM departure. These rides vary weekly, but often include Hwy 9, Page Mill, Old La Honda, Kings Mountain, West Alpine or Tunitas. Always be prepared for variable weather on Skyline.     Meet Bill Eaglstein (305-342-4053, weaglstein@gmail.com) & George Schuttinger (650-793-4221, gschuttinger@hotmail.com) at 9:45 AM at Cuesta Park in Mountain View for a 10:00 AM departure. On Cuesta Dr. going south pull into the parking lot nearest Grant Rd. Go to the back near the rest rooms. We’ll start there. We’ll take the Stevens Creek Trail to the Bay. Then the bay trail across Moffett (about 2 miles, hard surface with a little gravel) and the Sunnyvale Baylands Trail will take us to the Guadalupe River Trail for lunch at San Pedro Square. After lunch we’ll ride to the San Jose Caltrain station and ride the train back to Mountain View and bike back to Cuesta. For the more enthusiastic, ride back from lunch by reversing the route for a 40 mile ride.

    Because the upper part of Alpine Road is reportedly closed for road work, Thursday's C ride, which was called "Shady Alpine and Dirty Moody" will not include upper (shady) Alpine but will instead include a few wanderings off the beaten path.     This is a series of evening rides varying from 12 to 20 miles in Los Altos Hills and vicinity, sampling local hills and out-of-the-way roads.  Meet at 5:30 PM at Shoup park in Los Altos just off University Ave.  Every effort will be made to get riders back before dark, but bring lights just in case.     Meet Andy Kirk in front of Peet’s Coffee and Tea in Los Altos on State Street at 10:00 AM for a 10:15 AM departure. Park outside the town area, as there is a two-hour time limit. We'll wander through hills on the west side of Santa Clara Valley at a B pace and then meander to the east side of Lawrence Expressway at a similar pace. From there we'll find our way back to Sunnyvale. Bring lunch or buy at the only Togo's that is also a bar. Rain cancels.

    • Rheem Valley Shopping Center, Moraga

    The Berkeley Hills ride is back on the schedule, in a slightly less challenging form. The route starts with the fabulous Pinehurst climb, instead of doing Pinehurst after lunch. Also, the C route is 5 miles shorter and is now rated 3.5 instead of 4. To make this possible, the route starts from Moraga instead of Berkeley. Skyline and Grizzly Peak are still on the menu for all rides, while the D ride still climbs the “three bears”, “Pig Farm Hill” and Reliez Valley Road. Several lunch options at the end, at the Rheem Valley Shopping Center. Meet at 9:45 AM for a 10:00 AM start on the Moraga side of the Rheem Valley Shopping Center, by Starbucks and Burger King. Directions: From Eastbound 24, take the Oak Hill Rd exit. Right on Oak Hill, left for a short block on Mt Diablo and right on Moraga Road. The shopping center is 3 miles down Moraga Road, at the corner of Moraga and Rheem. Give yourself an extra 10 minutes, relative to the Broadway exit in Berkeley. Contact J.C.     This ride heads north from Rengstorff Park to the bike bridge over Highway 101 on its way to Shoreline Park. After Shoreline it crosses Highway 101 again on a second bike bridge and then meanders through Palo Alto and Mountain View on its way back to Rengstorff Park where the Oktoberfest awaits. The route includes a tunnel. Meet at Rengstorff Park at 10:30 AM (at the Crisanto Avenue parking lot farthest from Rengstorff Avenue).     The Monday morning ride for bicyclists who live in the northern cities of the Peninsula is growing in numbers. It is a flat (except overpasses) route to Café Borrone in Menlo Park for coffee and/or breakfast. We return at a social pace through the quiet, residential streets in Menlo Park, Atherton, Redwood City, San Carlos, and Belmont. The Hill Climbers’ Option adds 12 to 16 miles to the ride. Meet at Los Prados Park at 8:30 AM for a departure at 8:45 AM. Directions: From 101, drive east on Hillsdale Blvd., take the first right on Norfolk St. and right again on La Selva; take the first left onto Casa de Campo. The Park is on the left.     Peter B. has now retired from leading this ride. In honor of his many years of dedicated service we have named the ride after him, and the immortal works of his ride description will be retained here, mostly intact. So here we go: Retired, home executive, between jobs, playing hooky? We’d love to have you join us each Tuesday during the year, rain or shine, at Starbucks in the Westmoor Shopping Center in Sunnyvale, corner of Fremont and Mary, at a later, civilized hour. The route is a variation of the Portola loop with lunch stops at various eating places in the Palo Alto area. There are hilly C and D routes as well as a flat route. All rides meet at 10:45 AM for a prompt 11:00 AM departure. The hilly route varies through the month. Routes in Excel and PDF format. Everyone assembles together at regroups and lunch.     Join Bob Graf for a ride to Larkspur. This ride will include Sausalito, Tiburon and Paradise Drive to Larkspur. Larkspur ferry for the return trip.     • Target Parking Lot, Landess & Morrill Aves., Milpitas

    This route goes up Calaveras, a 3-mile climb with an overall average grade of 6%, including a few short, steeper sections. The fun, fun, fun rollers overlooking Calaveras reservoir make it all worthwhile, though. The D ride spices things up a little, with the addition of the tough 3-mile climb up Sierra Rd. After Sierra, the “parcours” rejoins the C route. Then it's down to Pleasanton for lunch (26 miles). The good news is that the return via Calaveras is not as steep. Meet at 9:45 AM for a 10:00 AM start in the Target parking lot of the shopping mall located at the corner of Landess Ave. and Morrill Ave. in Milpitas. Park on the side closest to Montague/Landess.     If you are not familiar with Mines Road, imagine a route profile in the shape of a barbell: A hill at each end and a beautiful flat road that follows the meanders of a creek, in the middle section. After a 5 mile warm up (3 turns to connect Livermore Park to Mines Road), the route climbs for 2.5 miles, followed by another 2.5 miles of fun rollers. Follows an easy descent to the flat section. The D route turns around at the “Junction”, a sandwich place that caters to cyclists and motorcyclists. Protein bars, Endurolytes and gel feature on one of the shelves. The C ride turns around earlier, at the county line. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Meet at 9:45 AM for a 10:00 AM start by the small grey restroom building of the Robert Livermore Park.     Meet Howard Shafer (408-7612-4573 or jhshafer@sbcglobal.net) at 10:00 AM in the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge parking lot on Marshlands Road for a 10:15 AM departure. (Take the Dumbarton Bridge/Highway 84 across the Bay; get off at the first exit on the east side; turn right and drive to Marshlands Road. Turn right. The parking lot is on your right after about one quarter mile). We’ll follow hardpacked dirt trails (suitable for road bikes) through Coyote Hills and along bayland dikes to the beginning of the Alameda Creek Trail. We'll ride the full length of this paved trail and then climb Morrison Canyon Road. Never heard of Morrison Canyon? This most unusual 2.5 mile (one way) out and back climb is not to be missed. You might see bison or aeronautical research. It is steep, but we'll ride at a slow pace. We'll have lunch at a genuine German Deli on the way back. If the (only) hill is too hard, you can skip it. Bike trails and lightly traveled roads for nearly the entire ride. If you've never experienced the ocean and coastal sights up close and personal, this ride is an adventure. Optional lunch at the Distillery at Moss Beach or at Princeton during return. At Miramar approximately 3 miles from the end of ride Hedy will lead an optional walk on the beach. Starting in Seascape, we will have two options for the longer and shorter versions of the ride.
