    The Complete Guide to Climbing calls this the hardest climb in California and compares it to Alp d’Huez. In just 13 miles we'll climb 5,200’ to Onion Valley (el. 9,200’). Option to do only 14 miles total and 3,400’ of climbing.  Long stretches of 8-10%. Meet at Dehy Park on the west side of US-395 at the north end of Independence. Look for the narrow gauge engine restoration that is going on at the site. When coming from the north, turn in just after crossing Independence Creek.     Join Guy Shuman for a jaunt through the local Cupertino hills. Our route will take us to Picchetti Ranch, Mt. Eden/Pierce, and the easy way to Redwood Gulch via Hwy 9. This will be a social paced ride with frequent regroups, but stronger riders will have an opportunity to stretch their legs by going as far as they want up Montebello Road.     This is a series of evening rides varying from 15 to 30 miles in Los Altos Hills, Portola Valley and Saratoga, sampling local hills and out-of-the-way roads. Meet at 6:00 PM at Shoup Park in Los Altos, just off University Ave. This year we will have three ride group options: C-, C+ and D, with route options suitable for each group.     A great but difficult climb out of the high desert towards Mt. Whitney. The route starts out tame and ends up tough with an average grade over 9% for the last 5.5 miles finishing at Whitney Portal (el. 8,371’).  \Long stretches of 10-12%. Meet at the Best Western Frontier Motel, 1008 S. Main St., Lone Pine, CA. Buy lunch on the ride at Whitney Portal. Ride leaves at 8:30 AM, please arrive beforehand.     Tepa, West Loyola, the Quarry, Moody, Golden Oak, Jefferson: This assortment of local hills is designed to get into the spirit of the Fall Fun Series. The D route visits all 6 climbs, while the C route cuts off the Tepa loop and substitutes Altamont for Moody. Optional lunch is at the Golden Triangle, on the way back to Gunn. Take first turn left onto Oracle Parkway before the main Oracle Complex. The parking lot will be on the left. We will on this last Saturday of summer travel south along Redwood Shores bay trail, then past San Carlos airport to connect to quiet San Carlos, Belmont streets with a refreshing stop at Cow-a-bunga creamery.     Another very difficult climb. We'll cycle through the Alabama Hills in route to the climb. Looking ahead, you'll see the giant switchbacks on the flanks of the Sierras. This is the steepest section but has some of the best views on earth of Owens Valley. A false summit is followed by a short descent before climbing resumes to Horseshoe Meadows (el. 10,080'). Option to do 39 miles and 5,800' of climbing. Meet at the Best Western Frontier Motel, 1008 S. Main St., Lone Pine, CA. Carry your lunch and a lot of water on the ride.     The Monday morning ride for bicyclists who live in the northern cities of the Peninsula is growing in numbers. It is a flat (except overpasses) route to Café Borrone in Menlo Park for coffee and/or breakfast. We return at a social pace through the quiet, residential streets in Menlo Park, Atherton, Redwood City, San Carlos, and Belmont. The Hill Climbers’ Option adds 12 to 16 miles to the ride. Meet at Los Prados Park at 8:30 AM for a departure at 8:45 AM. Directions: From 101, drive east on Hillsdale Blvd., take the first right on Norfolk St. and right again on La Selva; take the first left onto Casa de Campo. The Park is on the left. We will meet in the corner of the parking lot nearest the Shell gas station. This week's talk will be about "Are you living in a simulation?" by Silas Beane, University of Washington.     Peter B. has now retired from leading this ride. In honor of his many years of dedicated service we have named the ride after him, and the immortal works of his ride description will be retained here, mostly intact. So here we go: Retired, home executive, between jobs, playing hooky? We’d love to have you join us each Tuesday during the year, rain or shine, at Starbucks in the Westmoor Shopping Center in Sunnyvale, corner of Fremont and Mary, at a later, civilized hour. The route is a variation of the Portola loop with lunch stops at various eating places in the Palo Alto area. There are hilly C and D routes as well as a flat route. All rides meet at 10:45 AM for a prompt 11:00 AM departure. The hilly route varies through the month. Routes in Excel and PDF format. Everyone assembles together at regroups and lunch.     CAZADERO RAMBLE

    Join us for some spectacular riding North of the Russian River. This is a hilly ride, following the routes of the Cazadero LDT. After wandering North along Austin Creek Road, C- riders will take the direct route to the coast over hilly Fort Ross Road (LDT B Route) then stop in at Fort Ross State Park, while the C+/D group(s) will climb the breath-taking King Ridge Rd, then have the option to take a 50, 66, or 82 mile loop. Bring food and enough water for 30 to 45 miles between facilities, as lunch stops are near the end of the ride.

    MEETING LOCATION: Meet at 9:15 am for 9:30 departure at Gold Coast Coffee & Bakery (25377 Steelhead Blvd, Duncans Mills, CA). Take 101 North to Santa Rosa, exit on River Rd heading West. Follow River Rd into Guerneville. Go straight at the stop sign in Guerneville. Note: In Guerneville River Rd becomes Main St, then Main St becomes River Rd/Hwy 116. Continue on River Rd/Hwy 116 to Duncans Mills. Turn Left on Moscow Rd. Park on the street - not in front of the merchants. Driving time from Palo Alto is about 2.5 hours. 

    ACCOMMODATIONS:  We have reserved a nice group campsite at Casini Ranch Campground (casiniranch.com) for Friday and Saturday nights, which is less than a mile from the Saturday ride start and only 2.5 miles from the Sunday start in Monte Rio (contact ride leaders for information/rates). There are several small hotels/B&B’s in Monte Rio (where Sunday ride starts). Occidental Hotel (3610 Bohemian Hwy, Occidental, CA) is about 10 miles away in Occidental (occidentalhotel.com).

    Our Cazadero Sunday ride will start in Monte Rio, about 2.5 miles from the Casini Ranch Campground. Join us for an exploration of the deep forests, canyons, and rolling hills surrounding Occidental. We'll stop for treats at an amazing country bakery in Freestone and have lunch at the Coffee Bazaar in Guerneville. There will be separate C- and C+/D ride groups. The D route adds the tough, but beautiful, 1.5 mile climb from the ocean to Coleman Valley.Rain cancels.

On Cuesta Dr. going south pull into the parking lot nearest Grant Rd. Go to the back near the rest rooms. We’ll start there. We’ll take the Stevens Creek Trail to the Bay. Then the bay trail across Moffett (about 2 miles, hard surface with a little gravel) and the Sunnyvale Baylands Trail will take us to the Guadalupe River Trail for lunch at San Pedro Square. After lunch we’ll ride to the San Jose Caltrain station and ride the train back to Mountain View and bike back to Cuesta. For the more enthusiastic, ride back from lunch by reversing the route for a 40 mile ride.
