Sequoia Volunteer - Homebaked Goods (Sun, May 13, 2012)

This is your chance to put your expert baking skills to use for the club or to acquire baking skills. Last year's home baked goodies drive was so successful that we've expanded it! We're accepting cookies, muffins, breads or whatever can conveniently be consumed by a bicycle rider. Just sign up and let Suzie Shao know what you will bake and when you can deliver it. You can deliver on Saturday to the food distribution locale, to a rest stop (especially if you're volunteering there) or maybe to Suzie.

Every year, on the first Sunday in June, Western Wheelers hosts the Sequoia Century. This event is one of the most challenging and best run one-day bicycling events in Northern California. We can't do it without our volunteers.

The Monday morning ride for bicyclists who live in the northern cities of the Peninsula and across the Bay is growing in numbers. It is a flat (except overpasses) route to Café Borrone in Menlo Park for coffee and/or breakfast. We return at a social pace through the quiet, residential streets in Menlo Park, Atherton, Redwood City, San Carlos, and Belmont. The Hill Climbers’ Option adds 12 to 16 miles to the ride. Meet at Los Prados Park at 8:30 am for a departure at 8:45 am. Directions: From 101, drive east on Hillsdale Blvd., take the first right undefined Norfolk St., right again on La Selva; take the first left onto Casa de Campo. The Park is on the left. Retired, home executive, between jobs, playing hooky? We’d love to have you join us each Tuesday during the year, rain or shine, at the Westmoor Shopping Center in Sunnyvale, corner of Fremont and Mary, at a later, civilized hour. The route is a variation of the Portola loop with lunch stops at various eating places in the Palo Alto area. There are hilly C and D routes as well as a flat route. All rides meet at 10:45 for a prompt 11:00 am departure. The hilly route varies through the month. Routes in Excel and PDF format. Everyone assembles together at regroups and lunch. This is a series of evening rides varying from 15 to 30 miles starting at 6:00 p.m. from Cuesta Park in Mt. View. The rides are suitable for B+ and C riders with stops to regroup as necessary. We meet in the parking lot off Cuesta Ave and Montalto, there is a stoplight at the entrance. Most of these rides will be lead by various leaders. The rides will be in Los Altos Hills, Portola Valley and toward Saratoga. The leaders will attempt to introduce riders to lesser known roads and also to "walk-throughs" between roads not known to most riders. There will be some hills thrown in to spice up the route. Every effort will be made to get riders back before dark, but bring a tail light just in case. Route sheets will be provided to all riders. This will be a fun local jaunt before joining Pete Blasberg for his 90th Birthday Party/BBQ at Mitchell Park at 12:30. "C" riders will ride 29 miles, following parts of the Shoreline LDT route through sections of Palo Alto and Menlo Park, including loops on Woodside Drive, Eleanor Drive, and Alta Vista Drive. Social pace with regroups. There will be a separate "C+" ride led by Adrienne Harber that adds a loop on Westridge Drive for a total ride of 37 miles. Meet Howard Shafer (408-247-9980 or jhshafer@sbcglobal.net) at Rainbow Park, San Jose, at 1:30pm, giving you plenty of time to sleep in, go to church or whatever you like to do on Sunday morning. To get to the start from Lawrence Expressway, exit toward the closest hills (west) onto Bollinger Road and then turn left at Johnson Avenue. Rainbow Park is directly across the street from Lynbrook High School. We’ll start near the restrooms at Johnson Avenue and Donington Drive. We’ll wander through Saratoga and parts of Los Gatos on a route that will include some very classy neighborhoods. Expect to get some practice climbing and descending moderate hills. If you haven’t learned to shift gears, you can learn on this ride. There will be no lunch stop. Rain or other nasty weather cancels.

Join us for this wonderful Memorial Day finish to the LDT ride series. Mt Hamilton is a long, but not steep, climb with wonderful panoramic views and great spring wildflowers. All routes start with a loop through Alum Rock Park, then the B’s and C’s climb directly to the summit. D’s add a beautiful “out-and-back” spur on traffic free Kincaid Road on the way to the summit. E’s add both Kincaid and the exciting descent to the Isabel Creek Bridge on the back side of Mt. Hamilton. All groups have lunch at the summit – PACK YOUR LUNCH – NO FOOD AVAILABLE. Be prepared for warm temperatures on the way up and cold temperatures on the way down. Rain cancels.
